Japanese government donates meteorological radar towers 2nd tower is completed

On October 24, the handover ceremony for the completion of a meteorological radar tower and meteorological measurement radar system funded by Japanese government grants was held in Yangon. The ceremony was attended by the Japanese Ambassador to Myanmar Tateshi Higuchi, the JICA Chief Representative to Myanmar Keiichiro Nakazawa, and the Chief Minister of Yangon Region, Phyo Min Thein.

This project is setting up similar facilities in three areas Kyaukphyu Rakhine State, Yangon, and Mandalay and it strengthens Myanmar's meteorological measurement capabilities. In 2008, cyclone “Nargis" killed over 100,000 people and inflicted massive damage. This project aims to mitigate weather disasters in the Bay of Bengal area including Myanmar. In Yangon, there are two weather measurement facilities completed. The construction was done by a consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation and Taisei Construction.
